SEVERE WEATHER
An severe weather can happen anywhere and anytime, and it can happen to any of us. In an emergency situation, it is vital to think clearly and react quickly.
If an emergency occurs, it is essential for you to know what to do and what not to do. The time to find this out is before an emergency happens.
Once an emergency occurs, do not panic. Emergency information will be broadcast on the Emergency Alert System, on local radio and television stations. We will also send out a SMS on our activity page system. But in an emergency, it is up to you to determine what action is appropriate.
Here are a few of the differently types of emergency situations you could encounter while camping here at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort. This is not an all-inclusive list.
Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms produce many dangerous and severe forms of weather. Lightning, destructive winds, heavy rain and hail can all be products of thunderstorms.
During Thunderstorms seek shelter immediately and monitor conditions on radio or television.
What To Do
- If you are outside, head towards our Cartoon Café, Ranger Station, either one of our Comfort Stations (bathrooms), or your vehicle.
- If you are swimming, get out of the water immediately and get to a building or vehicle listed above as soon as possible.
What Not To Do
- Do not ride our metal bicycles.
- Do not go near trees, light poles, overhead wires, metal pipes, or water.
- Do not use the telephone except in an emergency.
- Do not take a shower.
Tornadoes
Tornadoes are violent storms with spiraling high-speed winds. Tornadoes are usually accompanied by hail, severe thunderstorms and wind.
When a tornado threatens, immediate action can save your life!
- Head to our Severe Weather Shelter which is located in our Comfort Stations (bathrooms). Our comfort stations are located behind the Cartoon Café and in our Pavilion. Take shelter in showers and the inner walls of the bathrooms.
- If you are in a vehicle or RV, vacate and go to a substantial structure. If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert with your hands shielding your head and neck.
Emergency Evacuation
In the event that there is an EMERGENCY EVACUATION, please evacuate immediately if told to do so.
- In case of an emergency an SMS will be sent by our activity texting system. Please download the Jellystone Park App.
- Use the designated exits as specified below:
- Stay calm.
- Do not return to the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort until text sent “ALL CLEAR.”

1st call: Call 911!
2nd call: If able please call our emergency after hours phone 269-217-9598 so we can assist with opening the gate for the emergency vehicles.
